If more than three currently apply to you, it’s time to recover with these 4 Detoxifying Foods that will help you bounce back after the holidays:
It may seem surprising but soup is my favourite detox food. I like homemade bone broth because it is so easy and made with holiday leftovers. CLICK HERE FOR MY BEAUTY BONE BROTH RECIPE. Drinking a cup every morning regulates congested bowels and balances insulin levels that spiked & crashed from holiday sugar. Chop up a bunch of veggies like onion, carrot, tomato, celery, garlic, etc into the cooking broth if you want more substance. Soup is very easily digestible at a time when your digestive tract is sludgy after the holidays.
This gorgeous orange fruit is revs up metabolism thanks to it being packed with digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes help you break down food. This fruit has a lower glycemic index and is high in fibre (good for sugar cravings). It is also filled with antioxidants that can combat free radical damage caused by all those boozy cocktails. If you are feeling immediately gassy or bloated after eating, incorporate some papaya every day.
This leafy green is the best helper in liver detox. Arugula is awesome because of it’s bitter taste. When your tastebuds experience bitterness, a cascade of signals occur to increase saliva, tone the stomach, secrete digestive juices and get the body ready for food. When you are prepped for food, you absorb more nutrients and vitamins.
This sweet green superfood has become an obsession for me this winter. I swear it revs my energy more than coffee can. Wheatgrass is taken as a freshly juiced shot, powder form into smoothies or melted from flash-frozen. I do a shot of it at least twice a week. Wheatgrass is filled with powerful anti-oxidants and is highly anti-inflammatory for your digestive tract. It is used in diabetes, high cholesterol, irritable bowel syndrome and anemia. Doing a shot of this on an empty stomach is a great way to press the reset button.
Along the way, ensure you are drinking adequate water to rehydrate and get things moving. Water is crucial to detox and flushing out garbage from your colon and skin.
Another great tip is to exercise. I like to ring in the new year with lots and lots of yoga. Yoga is great for a restorative mind and body exercise so I am replenished and ready for the new year.
